I Never thought I would soar the skies of Paragon City again after the game was shut down...what...8 years ago now? But the game -- the award-winning MMORPG City of Heroes is available to play FOR FREE, with the source code leaked to a number of servers who are hosting it for those who want to play. See comments for instructions on how to play for free. How to install and play: CoH Homecoming(i25): getting started Dredd's Guide to Loading City of Heroes It takes a looong time to download/install. Make sure you read the instructions on setting up a games directory before you start the download process (i.e. run the Tequila application). You are going to need about 5GB of free space to install and a fairly decent graphics card if you want to get the full benefit of the graphics (but there are lower graphics settings that should let you play nontheless). Remember that the technology this game was written for was state of the art 16 YEARS AGO. Most computers running now should have no problem running it.

Well since City of Heroes / City of Villians Homecoming went legit as of early January ( I'll let PMikey get in to that as he is our local Evangelist for CoH) , I have re-downloaded it and begun playing again!! Of course My first charcter is called Midnight Prime and I'm on the Torchbearer Server .
the system requirements are rediculously low and it still looks good and runs fine!!
Hope we can see you all on there some time soon.

Yep, as someone much more clever than I once said, "You can basically run it on a potato". I came back into the fold on a 10 year old computer with a pretty standard graphic card (for its time) and it ran just fine. With that being said, some of the newer zones, like the Night Ward with lots of constant ambient F/X were a bit "laggy". But other than Night Ward, everything else was pretty smooth at "normal" in-game graphics settings. Bought myself a new "gaming laptop" about a year ago and with the graphics settings cranked up to Full/Ultra, game looks better than ever and runs smooth as silk.
