A "Challenge" open to anyone reading this! The Rules:
1 - Every week or so a challenge will be put out; the challenge will come from the "winner" of the previous challenge.
2 - Challenges should last for approximately 7-8 days. Extensions will be given (upon request) before the deadline if there are no objections from the other participants. Late characters may be added to the poll (see item 4) but are not guaranteed to be added to the poll.
3 - Readers & participants alike may voice their opinions and critiques on other people's builds at any time during the challenge but voting will not commence until the official deadline for the current challenge.
4 - Voting will be done via an automated forum poll to be held in the Role-Playing Free-For-All section of this board where non-participants are encouraged to vote as well. Readers may vote based on any criteria they wish. They are encouraged to explain their choices but are not required to.
5 - Voting will usually last 1-3 days with the actual closure of the polls left to the discretion of the challenger.
6 - You cannot vote for one of your own creations.
7 - The version of the character with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the person issuing the challenge gets the deciding vote. For this reason, the challenger usually holds their vote until the end, but they do not need to do so, if they choose.
8 - Challenger gets to specify
• Power Level of the character
- Normal (Normal Citizen)
- Low Powered ("Street-Level" The Shadow/Moon Knight)
- Standard (‘City/Regional" Teen Titans /X-Men)
- High Powered ("World Spanning" Justice League / Avengers Level)
- Cosmic Powered ("Galaxy Spanning" Green Lanter Corp / Nova Corp)
• The Character concept
9 - Participants are permitted to interpret the character concept any way they like. Keep in mind that if is too much of a "stretch" that other people may not see it as a good "fit" and this could cost you votes. If a participant has more than one "interpretation" of the character concept, they are encouraged to submit multiple entries.
10 - All submissions must include
•A history for the character (must be at least 100 words)
•Brief "backcover blurb" or "elevator pitch"
•A Character build (in the Super Hero RPG system of choice) at the Power level stated in the challenge
CHALLENGE – THE FIRST Comic books have a long tradition of misunderstood monsters. Beings that generally, through no fault of their own, are physically frightening / horrific / repulsive to behold. Yet these poor wretches typically wish harm to no one and let harm none only wish to be either Accepted, or simply left alone. They are constantly hunted for simply existing or harassed until they are forced to move away from most "civilized" areas. Many times, they and their unique powers, and abilities, are often the only "thing" standing between those that would hunt and harass them and a threat intent on rampaging through the area causing death, destruction, or worse too many of the local citizenry. Character Concept: The Misunderstood Monster Character Power Level: Standard Level (possibly with a bit of experience gained from hiding and defending themselves from those that fear them) End of Submissions: July 30th at Midnight (12:00 am EDT | UTC-4) We're going to give you a little bit more time on this one seeing as its the first one in a Long time The Fine Print: All submissions are property of the person creating said submission but, by posting these creations here, submissions are assumed to be made available for general use by the public (as long as full credit is given to the original creator). Submissions are not permissible for use for the purposes of resale or profit without express written permission from the original creator.
All submissions are considered to be licensed under the Creative Common License 2.5 (Canada) and Creative Commons License 3.0 (US)

Here's my submission. I haven't made characters in a few years (Except for LARPs which are a whole different animal) and I'm remembering how the system works, but I think I did ok for being rusty.
•A Character build (in the Super Hero RPG system of choice) at the Power level stated in the challenge
PDF attached with character sheet and images linked below, Mutants and Masterminds 3rd edition, PL10 150 points (standard power level).
•Brief "backcover blurb" or "elevator pitch"
A misunderstood, disfigured medical experiment gone wrong. He lives underground scavenging what he can, building what he needs, and helping people when possible. •A history for the character (must be at least 100 words)
(Also in the PDF file)
The Rat Lord
Joseph Trainor, a down on his luck inventor and manual laborer, was the subject of a medical experiment in his early 20s. He needed the money and it was supposed to be harmless.
Lab rats and mice we being used to try to grow new human tissue using stem cells. At the time it was a radical new idea. Joseph took his $500 check and sat down in the chair to have some of his tissue extracted. No one noticed the rat that had chewed through its cage bars. During the procedure it bit Joseph. It was noticeable and caused him to jump, and that's when the lab tech accidentally put that scar on his face with the scalpel.
He's not sure what caused the mutation, maybe the stem cells worked in reverse, maybe it was the ultra high frequency sound generator he was toying with at home, maybe some toxic run-off from the power plant that he lived near, maybe there was something on that scalpel. Whatever it was it caused slow changes to Joseph's DNA. Over the next few months he became more aware of smells and his vision improved, then coarse hair started to show up in more places than before. Before long he was taking on the appearance of a half man, half rat creature.
He was always a bit of a recluse, preferring to work on his inventions (which were never very great) than socialize so it took some time for anyone to really notice. A long coat and hat hid the worst of his mutations, until the tail came in anyway. Joseph was forced to live underground in sewers and abandoned subway tunnels, eventually making one of them his home. He came up to the surface to forage at night and stays below ground during the day.
He kept inventing, although now his access to parts was limited to garbage and whatever got flushed down the toilet. He managed to make himself some armor and a weapon, which is little more than a few chunks of metal welded together that are rusty and covered with filth. His condition has made him able to calm and interact with animals on a base level and he calls himself, in his own mind at least, The Rat Lord.
One night during his scavenging at a local shopping mall's dumpsters, he was spotted by a night watwchman. Thinking he was just another homeless person looking for food, the watchman offered him a sandwich. He reached out his paw to take it and saw a familiar look in the watchman's eyes, the look of someone terrified of his appearance, a look he had seen a hundred times before when he was still living on the surface.
He tried to speak but can't any longer, the night watchman ran screaming. This alerted a nearby gang of street thugs who were vandalizing property nearby. When they found the night watchman he was frantically going through his keys trying to get back into the mall so he can call the police. Seeing an opportunity to get into the mall and go on a five finger discount shopping spree they jumped him, bashing him in the back of the head with a rock. Joseph watched from the shadows as he hit the ground, half awake and fading fast.
He leapt onto the first thug, pinning him to the ground and clawing him across the back. The other three turned around in time to see Joseph dart off into the darkness again. They drew weapons, two of them knives and the third a chain he wrapped around his fist.
Joseph pounced on another one, taking him down quickly and knocking him out when his head hit the concrete. He faced the other two head on as they attempted to stab and hit him. With two attackers right in front of him he had no idea how to handle the situation. He never had to fight more than the occasional animal or mugger now and then.
He ran forward and threw his body into the men. The one with the chain took the worst of it and got the wind taken out of him with the force of the blow. The other took a glancing hit and plunged the knife into Joseph's leg.
The pain was agonizing so he tried to turn around and attack, but the force with which he threw himself into the two men had him off balance and vulnerable. Suddenly a loud thud was heard and the attacker fell to the ground. The night watchman had stood up and knocked him out from behind with his flashlight.
He took Joseph into his office for medical attention and patched up his knife wound as best he could. Joseph goes back to that mall some nights to check up on him and that watchman leaves a sandwich out for him near the dumpsters every night, thanking him for saving his life.

C.H.U.D.
"Something lives underneath the streets of our city. It comes out at night and it watches. And it hunts."BOYS WILL BE BOYS
The background noise of the city wafts down a neglected alleyway of Irvington Heights where a late afternoon breeze blows bloodied wax paper from the open dumpster of Beatty’s Butcher Shop. Heavily laden the paper doesn’t get far before being trampled upon by a flurry of sneakered feet and the sounds of laughing children drown out the traffic from the streets.
The largest of the kids, Timmy, is at the head of the pack. Turning his head, he calls back over his shoulder, “C’mon, it’s this way!” The other four kids obediently follow Timmy’s lead, all the way up to a large metal door set into a concrete square to one side of the alleyway, where Timmy puts his arms out signaling the others to stop.
“This is it,” says Timmy, “it’s a service entrance to the storm drain system. The lock’s busted. Been busted for weeks. They say *HE* busted it.”
The smallest of the kids, Joey, pipes up, “He who?”
The other kids turn on him in exaggerated disbelief, and one of them says “You mean you don’t know?”
“Know what?”
Timmy gets a wild look in his eye, and struggles to control the glee in his voice, “What’s down there. I said ‘he’, but it’s really more or an ‘it’. It’s a CHUD.”
“What’s a chud?”
“C’mon down and I’ll tell you,” Timmy says as he and another boy lift open the heavy rusted door, revealing steps that go down into the dark. The group cautiously climb down the steps as they let their eyes adjust to the gloom outside the light let in by the doorway. The chamber has two tunnels in the far well, both with metal gates but one of them stands slightly ajar.
Timmy motions the boys to sit down in a semi-circle as he prepares to tell them a story, like a shaman of days gone by, orating to his tribe of faithful believers.
“A CHUD is a Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller. CHUD for short. They made a movie about them ages ago, like way back in the 80’s. It was supposed to be a documentary, a warning, but the government got ahold of it and they changed it. They didn’t want it to cause a panic because, like, the government caused it or something and they didn’t want people to know. So they changed it so it sounded all made-up and shit so no one would take it seriously.”
“Ah,” said Joey, “I don’t believe you. You’re just making that up.”
“No, no, it’s all real, I found a website that tells the whole story, the TRUE story and they say that there have been recent sightings of one in the neighborhood. You know how so many of the neighborhood cats have gone missing lately? That’s the CHUD, it likes its meat fresh.”
“Yeah, yeah,” chimes in another of the boys, “Billy Preston over on Fairfax says he saw it rooting through his building’s dumpster. It was huge!”
“That’s right,” supplied Timmy, “they say it can stand like eight feet tall, but normally it’s hunched over on all fours like a bear. But it’s not furry like a bear, it’s pale white and covered in scales and it’s got teeth like nails and claws like knives.”
“Gosh!”
“But it’s not just cats, he eats anything he can get his hands on. Cats, rats, dogs, even small children if he catches them alone.”
“So what are we doing down here?”
“We’re here for you Joey. You want to be part of the gang, don’t ya?”
“Y-y-yeah,” says Joey, a hint of doubt in his voice.
“Then you have to go through a rite of passage. We all did when we joined?”
“What do I gotta do?”
“See that tunnel over there?” he says, pointing to the open gate. “I need you to go down that tunnel and find a CHUD nest and bring me back something to prove you were there.”
“Alone?”
“It wouldn’t be much of a test if you didn’t go alone.”
“Okay,” says Joey as he slowly gets up and rubs the pins and needles out of his legs, “but how do we even know that there’s a nest down here?”
“All the gossip on the streets say he’s been in this neighborhood and the busted lock is a pretty obvious indicator. Plus, you know, Georgie Caruthers, said he saw something in this alley last week.”
“Where is Georgie?”
“Nobody has seen Georgie in days, my ma says they got the police out looking for him.”
“Georgie’s missing? I dunno, this doesn’t sound safe.”
“Don’t worry about it, Joe. They say it only comes out at night, which means it sleeps during the day. It’s whatchacallit, ‘nocturnal’. And we’ll be right here if you need us, just give a shout and we’ll come a-running. And here,” says Timmy as he hands Joey a flashlight, “this’ll help you find your way.”
Joey looks back at the other boys and then looks back at the open gate. Standing up just a little bit straighter, he starts to walk resolutely up to the gate and through. The tunnel itself is about five feet in diameter so there’s a good twelve inches of clearance between his head and the top of the tunnel. He turns on the flashlight only to discover that the batteries are almost dead and the feeble light of the flashlight doesn’t really show him much past what’s right in front of them. He opts to point it down so that he can see where it’s pointing.
“Hey,” calls Joey, “I think I see something on the floor. It looks like bones…chicken bones or something.”
“Nah,” Timmy answers back in a shout, “what would a chicken be doing down here. It’s probably cat bones. He eats cats, remember? Follow them, they’ll pob’ly lead you to the nest.”
The other boys all start tittering to themselves and Timmy has to put his hand over his mouth to keep from laughing out loud.
Joey obediently follows the trail of bones until he gets to a “T” intersection and cautiously sticks his head around the corner.
Just then a large white shape rears up in front of him, roaring, “Raaaaaaahhh!”
Joey lets out a blood-curdling shriek and backpedals three feet before tripping over his own feet. He scrambles back up and goes racing out of the tunnel to find the other boys laughing uproariously. Joey looks around, confused, until he sees the big white shape coming up behind him out of the corner of his eye. He twists around to face his pursuer, once again back-pedalling but this time, instead of tripping on his own feet, he’s caught by the pack of boys he laugh even harder and begin taking turns pushing him back toward the white figure that, coming into the dim light of the chamber, is revealed to be Georgie Caruthers with a sheet draped over his shoulders like a shawl.
Realizing what’s happened, Joey turns beet red with embarrassment and begins to get a little angry as the kids continue to jeer and taunt him for his yellow streak. One of them joking about how fast Joey came out of the tunnel.
Joey turns and starts for the stairs leading up to the alleyway, “I didn’t want to be in your gang, anyway!”
Surprisingly, Timmy starts after him, “Hey! Hey! Hold up there. ‘Course you’re part of the gang! You went through the trial, didn’t ya?”
“But I spooked and got scared. That means I’m either dumb or a scaredy-cat.”
“Well I like to think of it as I’m an evil genius and you fell for my cunning ruse. Besides, just about everyone fell for it. ‘Cept for Georgie, because he’s always been the one to play the CHUD. Heck, Rudy over there even wet himself a little.”
“Hey,” protested Rudy, “I did NOT. I fell down in the water.”
“Sure, Rudy,” laughed Timmy, “you keep saying that and someday we’ll believe it. C’mon everybody, let’s go get some ice cream.”
As the kids scrambled up the stairs, the shadows in the locked tunnel begin to move. As the kids slam the door shut behind them, the rapidly narrowing shaft of light illuminates a hooded figure wrapped in rags and the glint of scales on alabaster skin before the door closes completely, leaving the chamber once more cloaked in total darkness.
LATER THAT EVENING
With the sun going down and the street lamps coming on, each of the boys goes their separate ways, except for Timmy and Georgie pair off and head for the same building building where they both live. Joey, his family living in a building two streets over, takes a shortcut through the grounds of Butler High School. Coming out the other side, he sees the same Ice Cream truck that he and his friends stopped at earlier that afternoon. But the side panels of the truck were now closed and the hood of the truck was up, with the skinny old ice cream man leaning over the engine and cussing up a blue streak.
Just as Joey came up alongside on the sidewalk, the ice cream man slams down the hood and looks up in surprise at Joey standing there. With a combined look of surprise and embarrassment, the old guy addresses Joey and apologizes. “Sorry, kid, Didn’t see you there. I’m not supposed to use that kind a language in front of the ‘clientele’. It’s bad for business, you see. Tell you what, if you promise to keep this little slip between you and me, there’s a free ice cream in it for you.
“Gee, I dunno…”
“C’mon kid, any kind you like. Come look and see what you want.”
The skinny old man holds open the side door, and motions for Joey to come inside the truck. Joey gets in and looks around and sees a big chest freezer with the top left open. He goes to take a look and, is momentarily puzzled a split second before the truth dawns on him, “Hey, there’s nothing in here…oh, shit…”
If Joey had anything more to say, it was cut off as the ice cream salesman pushes him into the freezer and slams the lid shut. A half a heartbeat later, in a smooth and practiced move, he slips a padlock out of his pocket and into the latch bolted to the outside of the freezer, locking Joey inside.
Joey screamed and pounded on the inside of the freezer, but it was too heavily insulated for his screams to be heard and, aside from a few minor dents in the lining, he struggles gained him no chance to escape. He could tell that the van was moving, proving that there was nothing wrong with the engine. “Gosh, what a dope I’ve been,” thought Joey. After a few minutes, his struggles slowed and his screaming faltered as he started to feel overheated and woozy. Joey didn’t know it, but in that sealed freezer, he had a limited amount of air and it was rapidly running out.
Joey was barely conscious as the ice cream van came to a stop. He was only half awake when the skinny ice cream man opened the freezer and pulled his limp body from the freezer and dragged it out of the truck into a small garage barely big enough to hold the van. He dragged the body through an inside door, across a small landing and then down a short set of stairs into a basement hallway. At the end of the hallway was a reinforced door leading to a room that the man had specially prepared as his “play room”. The front wall and ceiling of the room, like the door, were reinforced and stuffed with enough insulation to provide ample sound-proofing against the loudest of screams. The other three walls and the floor were solid concrete, broken only by the plumbing for the sink and toilet and a drain in the middle of the floor.
But all of this was unknown to Joey as he slowly came to several minutes later. When he opened his eyes, he had to squint against the bare 60 watt lightbulb mounted in the ceiling. Joey shivered against the cold as he realized his clothes were gone. He looked around the room in a panic and discovered that the only furnishings in the room consisted of the aforementioned sink and toilet and the metal cot he found his foot chained to. The was topped by a thin mattress wrapped in a rubberized sheet and a lumpy pillow. At this point, Joey was assuming the worst. Unfortunately for him, his assumptions were correct.
The old man left Joey waiting for what seemed like hours and with each passing minute Joey’s fear grew and grew. By the time the old man returned, Joey almost jumped out of his skin at the sound of the key turning in the lock. Joey backed himself up against the wall, holding the pillow in front of himself for equal parts protection and modesty. His eyes grew wide in terror and the beating of his own heart pounded in his ears.
Seeing his prey trembling in fear, the old man got a wicked gleam in his eye and cackled aloud, “Ah! You’re up then. Good! Good! It’s no fun unless you’re awake. We’re going to have such fun you and I. Such fun indeed.”
The old man advanced on the small child and Joey screamed.
His scream was cut short, though, by the loud booming crash at the reinforced door. The old man spun around in surprise as the second crash against the door smashed it open, shredding metal and tearing the doorframe right out of the wall.
There standing in the doorway appeared to be a walking pile of rags but where the rags were wrapped around the head in a makeshift cowl, a pale white face can be seen, sparsely covered by iridescent scales. The scales were the least noticeable aspect of the face as the featureless eyes glistened black as the bottom of the deepest darkest well and the mouth was filled with dozens of razor sharp teeth.
The arms of the creature were covered as well, but the hands at the ends of those arms were over-sized and each finger and thumb ended in ragged claws several inches long.
It would not have been unexpected if the creature had roared like a lion but, instead, it could only hiss like a cat, if that cat had been underwater at the time. A garbled, gurgling hiss that no human voice could ever make, all the more terrifying because of this.
It was the old man’s turn to scream in terror, but his scream was even shorter than Joey’s as the creature backhanded him and knocked him hard against the wall, moving him away from Joey. The old man wimpered in pain and held his left arm close to himself, as if it were broken. As it was.
The ragged figure slowly advanced upon the old man, standing over him, just looking down and taking deep breaths in and out. In and out. In and out. At some point, some internal decision was made and the figure reached down and grabbed the old man’s good arm and the opposing leg.
And pulled.
The wet sound of the old man’s flesh tearing like tissue paper was mesmerizing to Joey and he could only sit in silence as gouts of blood jetted across the room and splashed upon his legs and soaked into the pillow he held in front of himself. He watched as the ragged figure kept its back to him and continued to breath in a out. Finally, the figure turned and faced him with those jet black eyes. His threshold for terror completely shattered, Joey resigned himself to the fact that any second now this creature would tear him to pieces and probably eat him.
But the creature didn’t eat him. It didn’t even hurt him. Instead it picked him up carefully in its powerful arms, wrapped him in one of the rags from his own body, and walked back out the way it came: Through the basement hallway, through the garage and the huge hole in the wall of the garage.
Once outside, the creature methodically made its way back to Joey’s neighborhood by way of back yards and alleys, being careful not to be seen anywhere along the way. Eventually, comes to the parking lot of the neighborhood’s police station. Opening the door of a police cruiser or, more accurately, dislodged it through brute force, the figure gently lay Joey down in the back seat of the cruiser.
“STAY…HERE…” the figure said in a garbled, gurgling voice, then turned and walked away.
But it didn’t go far. It turned the corner of the building and, easily leaping 15 feet to grab the bottom of the police station’s fire escape, and then climbed the fire escape to the roof of the station where he waited and watched until he saw an officer discover Joey and bring him inside the station.
His mission accomplished, the figure bounds across the rooftops of the neighborhood skyline until he returns to the alleyway with the unlocked access to the storm drains. Winding his way through the tunnels, he returns to his den, hidden far away from prying eyes. Once there, he wearily lowers himself down to his makeshift rag-lined bower. In doing so, he nudges a burlap sack that instantly erupts into a flurry of activity.
Opening the sack, the figure reaches in and pulls out a hissing and spitting tabby. Lifting the cat over its self, the figure tilts its head back and opens its jaw wide before lowing the cat and mercifully killing it with one quick snap of its jaws, and swallowing it with one gulp.
Having eaten, the figure lowers its head and nods off to sleep.
BACKGROUND
The creature referred to as CHUD has no knowledge of its own origin other than its earliest recollections of living in the sewers and surviving on whatever it could find there. When it finally discovered a way to the surface, it was amazed by the variety of foodstuffs available. But in its naivety it allowed itself to been seen and for a short time the emergency and animal control services of the city waged a multi-service crusade to hunt down and capture or kill this creature. Although knowledge of this creature was kept as low-key as possible, aspiring young screenwriters caught wind of the story and produced a low-budget film called CHUD in 1984. Ever since then, whenever he is spotted, the creature has been referred to as a “CHUD”. He has heard it often enough to refer to himself as CHUD, as he has no other frame of reference of self.
CHUD has been living in the sewers of the city for decades now and has gotten very good at not being seen. CHUD usually stays in the storm sewers during the day and only comes out at night when the sunlight won’t hurt his eyes and it’s easier to hide. He keeps to himself, but has studied people from afar and has learned to understand English and some Spanish. However with his different vocal structures, can only speak human speech with great difficulty.
Despite his best efforts to avoid people, with his empathic abilities CHUD is often drawn to people experiencing strong emotions and has intervened in several violent crimes. Even though his actions are often brutal, those he helps are usually quite grateful and CHUD often finds food and warm blankets left in alleys or near storm drains and manholes. Many of these offerings CHUD relocates and leaves them where they will be found my various homeless throughout the city.
DESCRIPTION
When he was first discovered back in 1984, CHUD was still a juvenile and only stood between three and four feet tall. In the ensuing decades, CHUD has grown into an exceptionally large and imposing figure standing over seven feet tall when fully erect. Normally he stands with a conspicuous hunch and typically appears about six feet tall, swaddled in rags that conceal most of his body from view.
When exposed, CHUD appears to be an exceptionally muscled human-amphibian hybrid with pale white skin covered sporadically by iridescent scales similar to fish scales, capable of withstanding small arms fire. He has oversized, featureless eyes that are pitch black. His mouth is disproportionately large as well and contains several rows of razor sharp teeth.
His arms are heavily muscled and end in exceptionally large hands with all of the fingers and thumbs ending in ragged claws several inches long. His legs are heavily muscled as well and proportioned somewhat like a frogs, allowing him to make prodigious leaps both vertically and horizontally.
ABILITIES
In addition to the physical attributes listed above, and the obvious capabilities these give him, CHUD possesses several abilities not evident at first glance.
CHUD’s senses are uniquely adapted to life underground. He can see in almost complete darkness but is easily blinded by bright lights. His hearing is exceptional and he has a form of echo-location that provides him a form of sonar which provides him awareness of his surroundings even in total darkness. His sense of smell is highly acute, allowing him to track prey as easily as a bloodhound. Based on his living conditions, however, he has yet to encounter a smell which would overpower his olfactory abilities.
CHUD’S skeleton is very flexible and he is able to dislocate his joints as well, enabling him to squeeze his body through any opening he is able to fit his head through. He has been seen squeezing through manhole covers that it appears he shouldn’t be able to fit through, and escape through tunnels even a small child would find difficulty navigating.
In addition to his physical attributes, CHUD possesses certain empathic abilities enabling him to sense the emotions of others. Intense emotions are like road flares to him and he is often drawn to people experiencing very strong emotions, usually in violent situations. This has led him into several bloody encounters. Whether it is a facet of his empathic abilities or coincidence, those he rescues often experience a sense of peace and calmness after being rescued and feel a sympathetic bond with CHUD going forward.
